► The Walton County Tourist Development Council
(TDC) along with county officials joined together for a ribbon cutting
ceremony signifying the reopening of the Miramar Regional Beach Access.
The new parking deck, located next to Pompano Joe’s on Scenic Gulf
Drive, [MAP IT]now includes more parking, storm water improvements and a new
innovative design to prevent future damage from storms.
“After eight months of construction, we are pleased to complete
this project prior to Memorial Day weekend and our busy summer season,"
said Sonny Mares, TDC executive director. “This is the result of many
great partnerships. Working cooperatively with the County, state and
federal agencies, contractors, local businesses and the community has
allowed us to stretch our resources and improve this access to meet the
future needs of our community and visitors.”
The Miramar Regional Beach Access parking lot was lost
after Hurricane Dennis in 2005. After the completion of the Western
Walton County beach nourishment project, the County began to apply for
permits to rebuild the structure. Last spring, the TDC reopened a
limited number of spaces and the restrooms for public use. This week,
the completely rebuilt access opens and is larger and more structurally
sound than the previous one.
The new parking area is reopening with 141 parking spaces,
restrooms and three accesses to the beach including one ADA access.
Rather than repair the previous 100-space parking lot, the decision was
made to construct a more damage-resistant structure to mitigate losses
from future storms. The new parking lot is supported by concrete
pilings to keep the asphalt intact. If the sand is washed out from
underneath the structure, the pilings will offer more support to aid
against storm surge. In addition to improving the structural quality,
the new parking lot has an additional 41 parking spaces to help ease
congestion along Scenic Gulf Drive. The $4.6 million project also
included storm water improvements and landscaping.
The new parking deck, designed by Taylor Engineering and constructed by
Vision Construction, was funded through an innovative public-private
partnership between FEMA, Walton County and the Southern Restaurant
Group, the owner of Pompano Joe’s. More than $3 million of the total
project cost was covered through hurricane recovery funds from FEMA
that were applied for after Hurricane Dennis. The Walton County portion
of the project was funded by the TDC through bed tax collections on
short-term lodging rentals.

► The annual Seaside Summer Concert Series is back on a new night, now every Wednesday from 7- 9 pm beginning June 3. Local favorites along with popular regional acts will take center stage in the Amphitheater and are sure to entertain guests of all ages. Below are the bands scheduled to perform in Seaside during the month of June.
June 3: Dread Clampitt - Blue-eyed SoulGrass, Hipbilly, Newgrass...these words have been used to describe Dread Clampitt. With clever and heartfelt lyrics, Dread Clampitt combines a sense of humor and a unique view of the world with the sound of Bluegrass, Jazz, Blues and Rock.
June 10: The Beggars' Guild - The Beggars' Guild blends elements of rock, blues, country, folk and pop into tunes that are honest, catchy and distinctly likeable, drawing comparisons to artists like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Counting Crows, and Bruce Springsteen.
June 17: Hightide Blues - Their sound is a throw back to southern rock with a modern twist and an original delivery that's in a category of it's own. Their delivery of acoustic and electric guitars with a hard-hitting rhythm section has lead to sold out shows all over the Southeast and won't be stopping there.
June 24: The WaCo Ramblers - The WaCo Ramblers, from Walton County, Florida, not Waco, Texas, are a group of rock musicians from different bands who joined up a few years ago with "The Red Rocket,” Jeremiah Campbell, to play late 40’s style Bluegrass music.
Seaside offers up an exciting lineup of musicians scheduled through August, so stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks. All events are made possible by the arts and entertainment fee collected by The Merchants of Seaside. For more information, visit SeasideFl.com.
