What about on April 22nd? Do something really positive and good for the environment and use the day as your starting date to make lasting, positive changes that can help protect the environment. If nothing else, have your household commit for just ONE day to observing some earth friendly practices.
- Recycle. Read ALL about your recycling options in South Walton county.
- Reduce electricity consumption - turn off the lights, TV, DVR,
DVD, radio, overhead fans - everything possible - when you leave a
room. And I know it's 85 degrees today but turn up that thermostat to
at least 78. Make a small investment and buy those earth friendly
bulbs - you save in the long run and it helps reduce electricity usage
drastically.
- Plant something. Go to Eastern Lake Nursery [map] in Seagrove Beach to find something to plant.
- Walk the beaches with a garbage bag - you will be amazed.
- Don't buy anything you don't need - think twice before you purchase it and ask yourself, "Do I really need this?"
- Try to carpool or think about your driving habits for the day -
do you really need to get to WalMart in Destin to do your shopping?
Buy locally as much as you can, even if it means spending a few extra bucks.
- Do not - I repeat do not - use plastic or paper bags if you go to the grocery store. I am on a mission to get everyone to stop using paper and plastic bags - they are bad bad BAD for the environment. For Godsake, bring your beach bag with you to bag your groceries if you have to. Or better yet, spend a few bucks on reusable grocery bags most major stores now sell. Just do it!
