Marla & Shane Photography - 2050 W. County HWY 30A - Blue Mountain Beach - (850) 622-9154
Local resident Marla Carter, one-half of the wickedly talented professional photography duo Marla and Shane of Marla and Shane Photography in Blue Mountain Beach, specializes in children's black and white portraiture. Marla's work is breathtaking - just take a peek at some of her portraits here. Aaaa-huh! I for one will not be surprised when someone from NYC or LA or some other major metropolitan area ultimately discovers Marla and she fast-tracks it to photography celebrity and fame!
From Marla and Shane's website: "Together, Marla and Shane Carter are shaking up the world of portrait photography along the 30-A corridor....While Shane loves beach photography and Marla favors black and white portraits of children, their shared philosophy of keeping it real allows them to capture timeless images that will be cherished for generations."
I caught up with Marla for this week's SoWalScene.com Q&A. Enjoy!

How long have you lived in South Walton? You were born and raised in....?
I have lived here 5 years. I was born in Woodland Hills, CA but moved to Houston when I was about 2. I have also lived a lot of places between there and here!
You already live at the beach - where do you vacation?
We don't get away nearly enough with 2 small kids, but we love to go places that we can drive around, explore the culture, landscape, and cuisine. Costa Rica is a favorite. This past summer we actually vacationed in Alys Beach....we do live in paradise!
What book(s) is on your nightstand?
I am about to start Trail of Crumbs by Kim Sunee.
If you were to come back as someone else, who would you be?
Hmmmmm.....someone like Dorthea Lange or Margaret Bourke-White. I would definitely be a woman and a photographer. I would want to be someone who took real images that documented real people, living real life.
What is your single greatest achievement so far?
I am really blessed so it is hard to pin down any one great thing that I have achieved and feel like I can take credit for. I am most proud of my children.
What is your favorite restaurant in South Walton?
I love food, so it is hard to pick a favorite! I eat lunch out way more than dinner, and my favorites right now are Smiling Fish (at Gulf Place) and Fire (Grayton Beach). YUM!"
What 2 things can you not live without?
Besides my family...my camera and the Internet.
What would you do if you won $1 million?
1/3 to charity. Then use the rest to build our forever house, take a fun trip, and maybe save just a little!
If you could change one thing about yourself, it would be...
My poor communication skills. I don't like to answer the phone, take too long to return emails, and never send handwritten notes. I am also REALLY bad at keeping up with family and old friends who I love and miss.
You are granted one wish. What is it?
A long life filled with health and happiness for my kids.
The best thing about South Walton is....
The natural beauty of the area draws in great people. (Snuck two things with that sentence!)
What is the greatest love in your life?
My family. No doubt!
What are the most important qualities in a friend?
A friend must be trustworthy, have both good listening skills and good advice-giving skills, a sense of humor that includes intelligent use of sarcasm, and of course mental stability!
Would you say happiness is found or made?
Made. Good thing it is not found or we would all spend way too much time searching and not nearly enough time enjoying life.
