Wow, what a job - organizing events for an affluent, exclusive beach resort community. That is exactly what Kelli Arnold does as Events Coordinator for Alys Beach. It's gotta be exciting, especially considering Alys Beach is garnering much deserved national acclaim which, I'm sure, will position them to attract some big time talent and to host some incredible events. I caught up with Kelli online for this week's SoWal Scene Q and A. Enjoy!
Thanks for doing the Q & A, Kelli! Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself – how long have you been in the area, where are you from, that kind of thing.
I lived in southern California until I was twelve. Then, moved to Hoover , AL and on to Tuscaloosa , AL where I graduated from the University of Alabama . I moved to the area six years ago next month!
You work at Alys Beach – what do you do?
I am lucky enough to coordinate the events on property.
How long have you been with them?
I just celebrated two years with Alys Beach!
Do you expect a busy season at Alys this season?
Spring has already sprung! Alys Beach has all sorts of fun activities going on this year – from an Earth Day Celebration to a classic style beach party to sandcastle building lessons, a visual arts festival…the list just goes on!
Any exciting upcoming events you want to tell us about?
I’m most looking forward to an event we’re calling “Digital Graffiti.” It is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend. Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach is a new festival created to celebrate and promote the world’s most talented and innovative digital artists—with an entire town literally serving as their blank canvas!
Using the latest computer, design and projection technologies, Digital Graffiti participants will actually project their unique works of art onto the white walls of the town.
Ooohh...that sounds like a really cool event and something I, in particular, will love! Keep us updated! So what is your favorite SoWal dinner spot?
I’ve really become a breakfast and lunch junkie! I love the Hibiscus for breakfast (sometimes an early lunch!) and for lunch, enjoy Summer Kitchen, Cowgirl Kitchen, Gravel Road , Smiling Fish, Shades and Stinky’s. But, Fonville Press has quickly become one of my favorite places to dine al fresco – in the amazing courtyard!
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off in SoWal?
I’m an active member of the Children’s Volunteer Health Network (www.childrensvolunteerhealthnetwork.org). In fact, just today, I attended the “Just for Grins” dental bus dedication. In essence, the dental bus is a dental office on wheels which will be parked at area schools for as many days as needed to serve eligible kids by providing preventive dental services such as exams, cleanings, fluoride treatment and sealants.
And, about two years ago, I started pick up kickball games. We’re still playing today – on Sundays, as a matter of fact, at 3:30 at the green at Gulf Place . And after a game, we all like to head up to Amoré for some of that yummy pizza and cold beer!
Thanks, Kelli!
