Ten members of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office successfully completed training to become certified child passenger safety technicians.
Over the last week, instructors with “Safe Kids of Florida” Emerald Coast Chapter put on the four day class. Following the classroom work, the students had to show their proficiency at actually installing the car seats at a public checkpoint held on the DeFuniak Springs Chautauqua Center Campus of Northwest Florida State College.
Several studies’ has shown that 80-percent of all child car seats are misused, or installed wrong. If there’s too much wiggle room, the seat is not securely fastened with the seat belt. In addition, all child restraints have an expiration date. Most seats expire six years from the day of manufacture, although this can vary by manufacture.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office now has certified techs that can help others in the installation of a child safety seat in a vehicle. Schools, civic organizations, and church groups may contact our office to arrange a time for one of our safety techs’ to visit your facility and help parents, or guardians in properly placing the seat inside the vehicle. Those interested can call the Walton County Sheriff’s Office main office number, 892-8186, to arrange a date and time.
